Virginia Governor has some explaining to do over daughter’s wedding

Virginia Gov. Robert F. McDonnell has said his daughter and her husband paid for their own wedding. So a $15,000 check from a major campaign donor was a gift to the bride and groom and not to him and therefore did not have to be publicly disclosed, the governor says. A subsequent refund check of more than $3,500 from the caterer went to McDonnell’s wife and not to his daughter, her husband or the donor.  More…

Grand jury indicts 35 teachers, officials in Atlanta, Georgia cheating scandal

In what has been described as one of the largest cheating scandals to hit the nation’s public education system, 35 Atlanta Public Schools educators and administrators were indicted Friday on charges of racketeering and corruption. For at least a period of four years, between 2005 and 2009, test answers were altered, fabricated and falsely certified, the indictment said.  More…

Police Chief suspended without pay after racy photo of him and gun-toting woman from his Facebook page leaked

Small town Pennsylvania police chief Tom Keller has been suspended without pay because of a raunchy Facebook picture. Keller, of Confluence, appears to be intoxicated in the photo, which depicts him wrapping his arm around an unidentified woman who has one pistol in her hand, and another stuffed down the front of her jeans.  More…

Burger King admits its burgers contain horse meat

Burger King has tonight admitted that it has been selling burgers and Whoppers containing horsemeat despite two weeks of denials at some UK stores. Burger King released a statement saying “Our supplier has failed us and in turn we have failed you. We are committed to ensuring that this does not happen again.”  More…

Boy Scouts reconsidering policy against gay membership

The Boy Scouts of America is considering changing its longstanding policy against allowing openly gay members, according to their news release. The organization, which has 2.7 million members, is caving in to pressure by "potentially discussing" doing away with its national policy after months of protests.  More…

Former New Orleans mayor indicted on federal corruption charges

Former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, who captured the drama of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 with an "SOS" call to the nation, was indicted Friday on 21 federal corruption charges, including bribery, money laundering, fraud and filing false tax returns. Nagin, who is black, is best known for urging the reconstruction of a “chocolate New Orleans,” adding, “You can’t have New Orleans no other way.” More…
